Whitehall
Whitehall is the name of the village on the small island of Stronsay in the Scottish Orkney Islands. Once a bustling fishing port, large majestic houses remain dating back to the days when the vast herring fleets came into the village from the 17th century to the 1930s.
In the winter of 1850, northern Scotland suffered a huge storm causing significant damage and over 200 deaths. The storm was so severe that it stripped away dunes and grass in the unsheltered Orkney Islands to miraculously reveal the Neolithic hamlet of Skara Brae, an Orcadian community from around 5000 years ago. Half dug-in to the ground, the Skara Brae houses were not only shelters but homes reminiscent of today’s family and community life. The living rooms contained stone shelves displaying cultural ornaments and decorative artefacts, yet from the outside they were unassuming, looking like nothing more than a small bump on the landscape.
Taking its name from Whitehall, and with respect to our founder’s own family history, it is the spirit of belief, community and adventure which is part of Whitehall Workplace Law.
